Hi all,
well the slow process of gathering funds for a new yak has begun with bits and bobs going on Trademe. :)
What are the rods and reel setups peeps are using on their kayaks? :?: I have a couple of rods I use out on the in- laws boat which I am hoping are suitable. One is a penn GT5200 1.6m rod with Shimano TR200G reel spooled with maxima 10kg mono? The other is a Shimano Backbone elite 7'6" with Shimano Saragosa 4000F spooled with 6kg braid? I spose these are ok for most fish but am thinking I would need a heavy setup?

I don't think you need a heavy setup - just a sturdy one. Keep in mind there's a lot of exposure to saltwater on the yak

For my everyday fishing.... 2500 / 3000 sized reels are ample. I have a 4000 Thunnus but would consider that a medium to heavy reel for the majority of fishing I do in the Waitemata. 6-10kg softbait rods are the business.

I cant really comment on stink bait fishing sorry.

Like the Aussie, I'm tending lighter for my yak fishing, unless I'm going for specific big fish (kingies etc). 4-8kg rods, 3000 size reels and 8-10lb braid. Thats for SBs mind you
